Adding My Girlfriend To Auto Insurance Policy

Postby Redvers » Sun Mar 15, 2015 5:05 pm

My girlfriend and I both live in Fort Lauderdale Florida where the insurance rates are high to say the very least. She is a first year teacher and money is tight for her just starting up; espically for her coming from northern Maine were auto insurance prices are 1/5th of what she is paying here. She is paying top dollar for insurance throught esurrance.com. My policy is written through Drive from Progressive via a broker that handles all of the business insurance for the company I work at. I pay a very reasonable $490/ 6 months. Cheaper than I could get insurance on the street.(I got a quote on my own and it was nearly double)

My question is would there be any downside to adding my grilfriend to my policy(proided it is  less than what she is currently paying). I relize the implications if we should split up, but aside from that does adding her to my policy put me at any unnecessary risk if she is in an at fault accident? Could I face somekind of civi suit if she hurt someone in an accident because my name was also on the policy?

I am about ready to buy a house and I could not stand a chance to loose any of my savings from the last five years from an unnecessary lawsuit.

Adding My Girlfriend To Auto Insurance Policy

You probably couldn't add her to your policy, unless you retitle the vehicle in your name.  If she has an at fault accident, then yes, it would be chargeable then under your policy.  I would suggest she call around.  Depending on her age and driving record, she could likely get a better rate. Good luck! Denise
