Book Rental Legal Issues

Postby Hagaward » Wed Jun 25, 2014 11:50 am

Hi!

Hope you can help me on this one.

I am planning to set up a book rental place. What are the legal issues involved in renting out books not written by myself? Does intellectual property rights prevent me from doing this? Do I have to acquire a specialised licence? I just need a general direction and some clues on how to go from here or what to ask ppl. Thanks in advance!

Book Rental Legal Issues

Hi Alvin,

I would definitely check with a local lawyer(I'm not sure where you are located?), but my guess if you purchase something, you can rent it to others.  I'm not 100% sure, however, if copyright laws could interfere but my GUESS is that as long as the books aren't altered in any way, you have just as much right as Blockbuster has to rent videos!  But I would definitely recommend verifying this with some legal aid center where you live.  It sounds like a great idea to me!

Best of luck to you!!
