Can I be sued for only hiring men or a certain race?

Let's say I own my own grocery or happen to own my own nationwide company like Enterprise rent-a-car or Krogers; can I be sued if I only hire one gender or race?

Does the goverment have a say in that? How is it legal for one man to be racist but as soon as he own a company it becomes a problem if he is still racist

I don't plan on doing this btw..lol. Just heard education institutes and companies are suppose to hire a certain amount of blacks, whites, asians..etc

Plus I always see EOE next to an ad as if its such a bad thing not to be an EOE.

I am confused when it comes to this since I wanna be in charge of my business, not the government! Also don't want a class action lawsuit filed against me if I decide to hire only men due to the rigorous work that my company involves. How am I a bad person for doing that?

Yes, some where along the line you can be sued if the opportunity presents itself. However, there are thousands of companies that only hire one type or person most of them say EOE in the "fine" print. It all depends on demographics.

Often you have to have a certain threshold of employees before the government can step in and dictate who you can or can't hire. If you're under that threshold, you can discriminate all you want. The specifics vary from place to place though.

It is definitely possible, if someone chooses to sue you. Think of back in the olden times when some places only allowed whites only to visit somewhere or just sit on a bench. If someone presses charges, you will be in trouble big time. Simple as that.
