Can one re-train a dog at the age of 3 years on potty behavior?

Postby osmont » Mon Dec 19, 2011 12:03 am

I have two small breeds that potty on doggy diapers now. I need to move the location to another area of the home. I am afraid they will continue in the old spot ruining my carpet in that area.

Also, I noticed remarks about consumers who purchase small mixed breeds from pet stores. What is
very sad is that when puppy mills are identified, I notice they aren't held accountable by our laws and continue to operate. Maybe laws should be enforced so that consumers don't feel they need to
be held accountable for others that mistreat their animals. I know mine are well cared for and not mistreated.

Can one re-train a dog at the age of 3 years on potty behavior?

Why are you teaching your dogs to go to the bathroom in your house? Why not housebreak them to go outdoors?

Most places are working on legislation to ban pet sales in pet stores. It takes time. At least the problem is recognized. However, the bigger source of the pet overpopulation is home breeders/back yard breeders. People who allow their pets to become pregnant instead of neutering them.

Yes you can retrain your dogs to potty in a different area. It takes time, patience and
a watchful eye.
Start by taking a diaper they have used and put it into the area where you want them to go.
Block off the area where they go now with a fence/baby gates or just do not let them into the room.
Take them to the area where you want them to go and let them smell what you put there and tell them to go potty or what ever you want to say. When they do, praise them and if you wish to, give a treat.
Continue doing this until they get the hang of it.

Crate them and keep letting them out get rid of the diapers your house is not a toilet and don't allow your dogs to use it as one .
Puppy mills supply to pet stores also pure bred puppies are bred and sold by puppy mills to stores

Definitely you can retrain a dog of 3 years.
1 thing, you have to thoroughly clean the original pee location with some solution..
Can't remember what its called.

So the pee smell won't be there, and they won't identify it as a toilet.

There are two ways.
1. By a spray, the kind you spray on where you want them to potty in the house, and keep them confined near the potty area, till they do their business, let them out.

2. I'm not sure what kind of residence you are living in so...
if in a condo/high-rise building. bring your dog down at maybe 3-4hour intervals.
So they have literally minimal chance to pee inside your home.
Eventually they will identify OUTSIDE as the potty place.
3years of age generally can hold their pee for approximately 6hours or so.
So once you resume maybe 2 walks a day, no worries about their bladders giving way.
If your home has a backyard. Spend more time outside.. By the pool/garden, read a book.
Have them stay outside longer, so when they need to pee, they can't get to the carpet. Or where ever in the house.

These all take time. So try to start when you have days off or public holidays.
So there is a consistency, then you can expect results.
If you do it one day and stop another, they won't be able to learn quick enough.
As they say, dogs have pretty bad memory.
