Can we sue for slander?

Postby gwynethpaltrow8 » Thu May 03, 2012 12:52 pm

My Fiance got kicked outta church for living with me before we were married a year ago!!! A few days ago the pastor had told a young lady that she should not use my Fiance as a Realtor and buy any house from him because he isn't a "true" christan man. ( Which who is he to judge for one). Now if the pastor is telling people to not buy houses from my fiance and is telling people to not affiliate with him because he had his membership taking away from him and hes going to hell isn't that slander or deformation of character. He's making my fiance loose money from telling these people hes not a good man ( which is one of the best men i have ever met)! What can we do with this? Do we have a case?

Well you have to prove it and slander is when it's a lie and to be truthful your bf is not a "true" Christian im the eyes of the pastor so.he didn't really lie. But maybe you can still Sue for interfering with his job? I don't know tho good luck

Your fiance should consult his attorney to see if he has a winnable case against this pastor.

It could be problematic, since the defense against such a lawsuit would be that the statements made by the defendant are true. The pastor's statements may be opinion, not factual statements, and therefore subjective. Can the plaintiff (your fiance) prove that they are false statements?

None of the guesses from strangers online matter much. His attorney's advice matters a lot.

The trouble with slander is proving the monetary losses . If you have someone willing to testify they turned their business away from him because of the pastor then you might have a case . Slander is a civil matter . Your best bet may be to bring this to the attention of the church council and any governing body . Go public . Does your local paper or TV station do public interest stories ?

being a "true christian" is a matter of opinion, i for one, am in a way in agreeance with your pastor.... it is my CHRISTIAN belief that one should not live with the opposite sex while being in a relationship with them until they are married. opinions usually dont hold up as slander cases... and religion stays out of courts anyway. you dont really have a case because your fiance didnt lose anything due to it. yeah he lost a customer possibly but he didnt LOSE money..he is just as whole as he was before the 'customer' came to be.

It's not slander if it is true. It is true that he was kicked out of the church, and if people are stupid enough to not do business with someone because of a reason like that, there is nothing that the law can do about it.

It's not illegal to boycott a business.
