Coast guard question?

Postby collyer » Wed Apr 06, 2011 8:46 am

I think the coast guard stands for alot..they help out search and rescue, and also busting drug runners. i think it would be a good organization to join. i live in florida, this is a hot spot for people breaking maritime laws. if i chose to sign up, can i stay in my home state for sure, or do you not have a choice. any recruiters here?? thanks. =]

The Coast Guard is a good organization. You will be stationed where they need you, but you can request a duty station in Florida.

If you go into the reserves, you'll know where you'll be working before you sign anything. If you go active duty, you can get a guaranteed district in your contract but that includes South Carolina (I don't know if you can get a guaranteed state). If you go active without a guaranteed district, you can put it on your dream sheet but ultimately it comes down to where the Coast Guard needs you (and a lot more people put down FL, CA and HI than AK or New England, so a lot of people don't go where they'd want). Talk to your recruiter to see what they can guarantee you and make sure its in the contract (although CG recruiters tend to be more honest than some from the other services).
