Yes, I know ER probably seems a little played out at this point. And it's not as original as House. But I've been a fan since the beginning, and if you go back and watch some of those early episodes, you'll be struck by how great the acting and writing and pace is. Watch Noah Wyle grow from callow to old beyond his years. Watch George Clooney bring depth to the rogue. And then there's Julianna Margulies, who connected so much with viewers that they decided not to kill her off after the first episode, as had been the original plan. That first episode, by the way, is a triumph of pacing and plot. As for St. Elsewhere, it's the medical drama that set the standard for all to follow. Before St. Elsewhere, shows were either mysteries or comedies and left the real character development and depth to movies. That changed with this show, which also had a strong cast, a number of whom went on to bigger and better things(most notably Denzel Washington).
