How can I dye my black hair brown?

Hiya!
I want to dye my hair brown.. but i dont want to like bleach my hair since its black. I have 'friends' ( there in my class but we dont talk) who have done it before but im kinda shy and dont want to ask them. How light do you think I could go. Any good namebrands for dying hair from a drugstore? any other info well me helpful. thanks!
