Small-time investment into physical commodities is terribly cost-inefficient.  Coin dealers will first rip you off on price(remember, they are not selling gold, they are selling coins, which is gold plus engraving of dubious resale value, and you have to buy the engraving if you want the gold, but do you really want it?) and then charge you for shipping and handling(including insurance).  Even if you start buying standard 10-ounce bars one at a time(which at current prices will cost you a few thousand dollars each), you will still be paying extra for physical delivery and small purchase size...

at that price, the commissions will Kill your investment. Almost all gold is sold at Spot plus. If you buy 10th of an oz. of gold coins, you will have to pay about $10 to $20 commission on spot. You will not get that back when you sell the coins. That means you are 20% down to start. The best you can do is either save up and buy an oz. every 10 months, or buy shares in a gold mining company... That will not give you any gold in hand.
