Is it common practice in most law firms....?

I retained a lawyer who worked on my case for months...on my hearing date, they sent a less qualified 'lawyer" to represent me., which he did very poorly. They did not notify me prior..is this common? And is it grounds for legal malpractice.

What does your retainer agreement say? Does it say only the one person you think you hired will work on your matter / go to court? Does it say you were retaining the firm, not one lawyer, and that any lawyer might work on your case?
