no, the real purpose of the illegal drug laws is to justify the continued employment of the DEA.   TheLightWorks 24 months ago

No. In the beginning(1930s or so) the goal WAS to prevent people from taking dangerous narcotics that could hurt them. Unfortunately, over the decades a bureaucracy developed that now employs thousands of people(local cops, DEA, prison gaurd unions, probation officers, gov. sponsored rehab coalitions, etc.) in our country. To pay all of these people you need the drug war to not only persist, but expand to cover ever more "dangerous substances." So now the goal IS to prosecute as many people as possible and keep them in jail as long as possible. It's both sad and true, but the goal of the drug war IS to make money.   WaterMonkey 24 months ago

The real goal of illegal drug laws are varied. For example, Nixon made marijuana illegal because he felt hippies were a threat to the government and this would be a good excuse to jail them. His war on drugs had little to do with any scientific evidence against them. As they are still illegal, despite the fact cigarettes and alcohol are far more addicting than most of the drugs used, with the exception of heroine, crack, and possibly cocaine, I would venture to say it goes back to a Republican misusing his power. So what else is new?   Skylight 24 months ago
