Please help! Starting a new business and want to get everything right. I am feeling quite lost. When I google "Workers' Compensation" I only get commercial stuff, but I need some more personal advice please. What is the deal with Workers' Compensation? What do I need to ask the insurance company when I call them? What is about? Thanks a lot!
Firstly good luck with your business. Workers Compensation Insurance needs to be taken out so it protects not only you but also your employee in-case they get an injury whilst at work or hurt whilst go to or from work.
I fell at work and hurt my elbow and shoulder, so I went to the doctors and they put me on light duties. My work provided a list of light duties which did a range of things and include doing nothing until they could find something for me to do. So I spent 8 hrs at work reading magazines, searching the internet, watching tv, just waiting for my name to be called to do something (work wanted me at work instead of sitting home and having lunch with friends) and that is my bosses right to do that, I was happy cause I still got paid anyway.
Whether I work casual, part time or permanent my boss still had to pay the average hrs per week. I am not entitled to penalty rates and they can put me on the most basic wage. If doctor says I am not to work then during this time I do not accumulate super, sick or annual leave during this time.
The insurance company reinbuse the company. Hope this helps
