Honestly, I don't know that I've known so many adult performers on a personal basis that I can answer this question comprehensively - I usually deal with producers and webmasters. I do meet them at adult industry shows and sometimes I have handled some things for some of them, and from time to time I get calls and emails from them, but nowhere near a huge number of them.
My personal observation is that there is a wide range of different personality types ranging from sophisticated and savvy to the exact opposite, but the performers who tend to survive more than a few months or a year or two are those who think ahead, design and calculate a pattern of career progression, ask a lot of questions, and watch and listen to everything that goes on around them. The field of adult performers has always been a revolving door and the large majority do not stay long; they presumably get out of the experience what they are looking for(not that all of them do) and then they make an exit - often quite calculated in advance. That's part of the reason that there are so many performers who have appeared in one and only one scene. This world of adult entertainment, I suspect, is a bit more like the real world than Hollywood is, and that it's populated with people who, in the main, are more realistic and less driven by exaggerated fantasy and illusion about themselves, though there are notorious exceptions. I've met some really high quality, very bright, wonderful, impressive and decent people in the ranks of the performers, which may be a shock to some. I can't say that it did not surprise me at the start! And there are some who are none of those things. In most professions, careers, and callings, from medicine and law to plumbing and electrical work, you will find successful people of many different personality types, often attracting clients, patients, and customers with personalities compatible to their own. The porn world is no different. They are not all the same and there is room for many different kinds of people. I don't encourage anyone to get into this line of work, but if it is your ambition, all best wishes to you.
