i was told by the executive director that the position of health and safety director was mine "if i wanted it" and that the executive board agreed they wanted to give me the position. the executive director stated that by law she had to post the job opening and accept resumes from applicants but she was only doing it because it was the law. she told me i still needed to come in for an interview so i did and when i went in for the interview that monday she said by that friday i would be called back about the position. i still hadnt heard anything so i texted her that following monday and she said she had 1 more interview to do and i should hear something that monday. i never heard anything so that wednesday i called her and she told me she was giving the position to someone else and was just waiting for his background check to come back clear. Is there a law against this? Also once she told me that she was hiring someone else I deleted the office facebook page that i had created which then alerted 12people who had confirmed they were attending a fundraiser, that the fundraiser had been cancelled. the executive director texted asking what happened and i told her i deleted the page. after realizing it had sent out the emails i went back in and reactivated the account and recreated the event then went back and resent the event invitations. she has since then went and created another office page and one of her friends has left a comment about filing against the person who sabbatoged their old page. She is going around telling people i tampered with the office page when i was the one who created the page and it was under my name. My main questions are...is it illegal for her to hire someone else after she has already told me the position was mine and is it considered defamation of character for her to be saying I tampered with their office page when the page was actually created by me and was under my name?

Disappointing as it is, they can hire whoever they want, regardless of what they may have lead you to believe. You don't have a job until you actually have a job offer, and unless they gave you an offer letter or other contract stating you had the job, you didn't have it. Legallyt they did not break any leaw in this situation. As for the second issue, even if you create a web page for work under your own name, it is their web site and their property, not yours. Again, unfair and unpleasant but not illegal. It sounds like it may be time for you to be looking for another job, if you feel you are being treated badly at this one.
