The implications are a single incident has removed discretion from the people who adjudicate hundreds of these cases on a daily basis.
Take a look at the Defending a Federal Case series. They cite the Bureau of Prisons own data proving sex offenders re-offend at less than 20%. The violent criminals re-offend at a rate closer to 60 or 70%. But we don't have a registry of violent tendencies, do we?
Our freaky fundie society has determined that sex crimes are icky. And deserve a disproportional punishment.
Punishments for rape and murder already exist. Jessica's Law just lets us be more vindictive. And that's sad.
But no politician ever lost reelection by being hard on crime ...
