What could a person do with a B.A. in LGBT Studies? Will this academic trend take off?

Postby aenedleah10 » Fri Feb 24, 2012 3:25 am

San Diego State University is proud to have to accept the first cohort for their new major in Spring 2012. The university is the second in the nation to grant such a degree and arguably was the first to offer a B.A. in Women Studies in the '60s. Here is an excerpt from a Women Studies professor praising the new program:

“Students are realizing that having a minor or major in LGBT studies is a huge asset in getting them into medical school, law school or even the corporate sector,” Rothblum said. “It really shows that they have a level of expertise that a lot of places want. Most places really like it if their employees have an understanding of diversity.”

I guess you would be looking for a job for a pretty long time. What sort of job would a person do who has a degree in that area? To me it seems like a total waste of time and money.

It could be useful if you were going into psychological counseling (dealing with depressive LGBT members). A B.A. in LGBT studies itself probably wont get you much, but if you have a minor/major with it, it could be of use.

Keep in mind that any college degree you get is helpful in job availability, regardless of what you get it in.

many universities offer courses in 'lgbt studies' and 'queer studies.' they are often part of sociology departments. what's new here?
as for job opportunities, there aren't many jobs available for majors in sports management, art history, medieval philosophy, British literature either.

You could become a booty warrior just like me. Or a high school speaker on how terrible it is to have AIDS like you do.
