What is the proper removal of the placenta after vaginal delivery?

Postby dennie18 » Tue Nov 22, 2011 3:09 am

I had a vaginal delivery in which I believe the dr was negligent. Four and a half weeks after the delivery, I noticed a foul smell as well as a small piece that was protruding out of my vagina. It was black in color and I could not remove it. Went to the Dr immediately and she found that it was part of the placenta. Now I am having to undergo a d and c. I am very distraught over this and am considering legal action. The dr did nt adminster a higher dosae of pitocin. He also let me tear instead of performing an episiotomy. Does this sound like a case of malpractice

Contact your attorney immediately along with getting a different doctor's opinion on the matter.

And I know it's probably the last thing you want to do, but I would suggestion photographing along with gathering all medical records documenting this.

In normal circumstances, the placenta just comes out in one piece and does not need medical intervention for this to happen. I guess a small part of yours broke off and didn't come out with the rest of it. The physician probably didn't know that this occurred, and maybe the small piece didn't come down for several weeks after the delivery. You would probably have to ask a lawyer that specializes in medical malpractice for your answer, but don't ask another doctor, because they won't rat out on other doctors, no matter how negilent the delivery doctor was. I seriously doubt that you would have a case for a lawsuit. Sometimes weird things happen, through no fault of the doctor. They aren't God and can't be held liable for something this minor. I know it's not minor for you, but since I am sure you won't have any permanent injury from the D&C, I don't think a jury would award you any kind of judgement. They would probably find the doctor innocent of any wrongdoing. Sorry this happened to you and I hope that you recover fully and completely.
