checkpoints, attempting to ferret out intoxicated motorists. Activists warn that this can be a particularly dangerous situation for immigrants, whether or not they hold valid drivers licenses, since police officers are likely to use this opportunity to check the legal residency status of those individuals suspected of being undocumented.

The dangers posed to undocumented immigrants by these police checkpoints is one example in a long line of additional stresses placed on this part of our country’s population during the Christmas season. For many, the holidays are a time for public revelry, trips to shops and restaurants and visits to the homes of relatives too far away to travel to regularly. However, for those without the proper authorization to be in this country, long car trips and public celebrations can ultimately lead them into police custody.
In addition, the holidays are certainly an extremely difficult time for those families in this country who have already been split up due to U.S. immigration laws. This Christmas, thousands of undocumented immigrants are in custody in federal facilities, most not even permitted face to face visits with their spouses and children. And, of the 400,000 individuals deported from this country in 2011, most have been separated from families still in the U.S., including immediate family members who are U.S. citizens. As many in the U.S. travel to spend the holiday with those they love most, these people will have to settle for a long distance phone call.

Taking what could be a particularly depressing and hopeless time of year and creating something positive out of it, many immigration activists are using this holiday season to spread awareness of the cruel treatment received by immigrants in this country and the need in the U.S. for comprehensive immigration reform.

the checkpoints can be a danger to anyone driving drunk
it has nothing to do with illegal aliens
illegal is illegal
it is also a difficult time for murderers who happen to get stopped in a checkpoint.
they break the law things will get difficult..

I am sure that legal immigrants are having a wonderful Christmas. Families would not be so split if pregnant illegals did not cross the border in labor so their babies would be born here and plugged into the welfare system. Simple answer: Go home, get in line and come legally.

In addition, the holidays are certainly an extremely difficult time for those families in this country who have already been split up due to U.S. immigration laws, illegals just do not want a nation of laws. They want to drive without licenses , insurance, they think cry racist if asked for an id, they brainwashed themselves into thinking they have a better life, as it goes, the mexico they left, is the mexico they want to create here. I never see mexicans talking the the cruel treatment received by immigrants in their country. The shake them down, rob them, leave them penniless begging for food, you never see mexicans talking about what happens in their country.

We can all pray for the illegal immigrants to receive the gift of deportation so they can be reunited with their extended families in their home countries and reintroduce their children to their culture even if it is financed by the US taxpayer. That could be remedied if the illegals demonstrate the dignity to pay for their own trip back home.

Then it must be time for them to go back to their own countries.

Know what funny about "As many in the U.S. travel to spend the holiday with those they love most, these people will have to settle for a long distance phone call." They'd use the same long distance form of communication over a CELL PHONE!!!!! rofl

mlm the illegals. and mlm their activists. All of them can get out if they don't like our immigration laws. If any thing about the immigration laws needs to changed, it's taking in less, not more!!

@Renee - Please do.
