What kind of laws protect images on the internet?

I'm working on creating my blog and want to use photos I found online to help design the template. However, I worry I can in trouble for using them. At the moment, my blog is mainly personal. However, in the future, I might ad adsense to it and will definitely be using my blog to promote my novels.

If the images are copyrighted, you can not use them without permission. If you live in a civilized country, the owner can prosecute you. You could move to your own private island and get away with it (until you came back to the civilized country).
