What laws exist to protect internet users from slander or from being bullied online?

So, could someone explain the whole 'online bully' stuff? I really don't get it. I mean, I grew up with CONSTANT verbal abuse from @ssholes in school. I just trained myself to ignore them. Took about a year. After that I wouldn't even react. I didn't look at them. I didn't say anything. I didn't even slow down or speed up. They just didn't...exist. After awhile people started making fun of how stupid the bullies looked, and they had to go find someone else to bother.

Online bullying is even easier to deal with because you can tell your device to just delete the stuff:

If the bully emails you, delete the email. Add the bully's address to your email client's blacklist or filter. No more email from the bully.

If the bully IM's you, add the bully's ID to your block list. No more IMs from the bully.

If the bully writes garbage on your wall on Facebook. Unfriend the bully. Make your account readable only by friends.

Also be sure to use strong passwords so the bully can't guess them and gain control of your accounts. Most passwords can be 10 or 12 characters long. Use all of them. Use a sentence like: IEatPopcorn! (12 characters, mixed case, special character = very strong) or even better:
IEatPopc0rn! (12 characters, mixed case, number, special character = very very very strong!)

Even if the bully knows your phrase "I eat popcorn" he still won't have the exact password.

If the bully calls or leaves voicemail, add the bully's phone number to your block list. If the bully keeps calling you, file a police report for harassment. You can get the records from your phone provider if they need them (it's your phone #, so you shouldn't need a subpoena.)

If the bully threatens you - verbally, via email, IM, whatever - file a report with the police. The message is now evidence. If that doesn't stop him, go to the court and get a restraining order. If the bully violates the restraining order, call the cops tell them the bully violated the restraining order, and they will arrest him.
