Who Was The Most Religious President Of The United States?

Postby Bodaway » Sat Mar 22, 2014 1:22 am

Who are the leading contenders to be the most religiously devout presidents of the United States? I am not interested in faith...but in devoutness of religious expressions.

Who Was The Most Religious President Of The United States?

He was(and is) a devout Baptist evangelical.  He attended church regularly and I always had the sense that he guided his actions by his faith.  Certainly his devotion to peace-making and building homes with Habitat for Humanity are reflections of this.   A complete list of presidential religious affiliations(and information on the religious practice of each) can be found at the source below.

Who Was The Most Religious President Of The United States?

Postby Gervin » Wed Mar 26, 2014 6:47 am

Dr. Gary Scott Smith has written a book on the subject, titled Faith and the Presidency: From George Washington to George W. Bush(Oxford University Press, 2006), and surprisingly he has this to say about the current president:George W. Bush is among our most devout presidents, but his faith is not unusual. Many presidents attended church very regularly. Numerous chief executives testified that prayer was vital to them. Bush does not quote the Bible or refer to the importance of faith, prayer, morality, or providence any more than many of his predecessors. The book includes chapters on George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, and George W. Bush.It seems that n his estimation, besides the current president Bush, FDR was one of the most devout:Franklin Roosevelt repeatedly emphasized the importance of the Bible, prayer, and Christian morality. He frequently urged Americans to work for spiritual renewal, promote social justice, and strive to achieve a more abundant spiritual life. He frequently asserted that God directed history, considered himself to be God?s agent, and insisted that the United States would prosper only if its citizens sought divine guidance and followed biblical principles. The entire time he was president he served as the senior warden of the St. James Episcopal Church in Hyde Park, New York. The Democrat frequently urged Americans to pray, thanked others for praying for him, and included prayers in his addresses. During World War II, the president set aside three special days of prayer to ?solemnly express our dependence on Almighty God.? Roosevelt?s most famous prayer was the one he composed and then read during the D-Day invasion on June 6, 1944.So it's hard to say who were really the most devout, but the ones he has profiled in this book are among the top contenders.

Who Was The Most Religious President Of The United States?

Postby Daire » Sat Mar 29, 2014 10:14 am

Jimmy Carter should be a fairly obvious choice for this list, as should Woodrow Wilson who was the son of a Presbyterian minister. James Garfield was actually an ordained minister, Benjamin Harrison was a Presbyterian Elder and taught Sunday school and McKinley was a devout Methodist. As to who was the most religious; your guess is as good as mine but I dare say that he comes from this list.

teaman2007, regarding your answer "Among recent presidents, Jimmy Carter": Without hesitation, I believe you are correct, in real terms - not sure why you got the 'okay' rating, however, all you have to do is read books and writings by or about former presidents, and your widget has supported your answer.

newbie134923, regarding your answer "It's very difficult to quantify which President was most devout":It is impossible not to declare this answer as simply wrong. It is common knowledge that Thomas Jefferson was a deist. Saying that FDR was devout is truly laughable if you know his biographies. The source is weak at best. I mean no ill-will but this is not an answer of any value at all.
