Why Do Famous People Run For Public Office?

Postby Osmond » Thu Jan 16, 2014 12:53 pm

I reside in Sacramento, CA. We currently have Arnold as out "Govenator", now we have former NBA basketball player Kevin Johnson operating for Mayor. A lot of young men and women vote for them due to the fact they consider "it'll be cool to have them in office", but what do they really know about running a state/city???

Why Do Famous People Run For Public Office?

Famous People in Politics Because they can.    I guess they are still use to the celebrity.  Some of them really do want to do a good job.  I think that they feel by being so well known, it could help them get elected.  But, they have seen a need and want to do something to fix it.  IAMIRISH 70 months ago Please sign in to give a compliment. Why Do Famous People Run For Public Office?

They get a running start... Especially actors... Especially if they have played and portray a HEROS persona.. Need I mention Ronald Reagan??   Most of voting and elections is name recognition.. If you're already famous, in a good sorta way, you're one up on other candidates..   I also shouldn't have to tell you that "attractive" candidates poll better then trolls..Most actors and sports figures are larger than life..   However, no matter how much glammer is associated with public office, it's a thankless job and strenuous.. If a candidate is doing it for pure ego, he will tire quickly... Sources: Seen it !! kymlor 70 months ago Please sign in to give a compliment. Please verify your account to give a compliment. Why Do Famous People Run For Public Office?

Why not? As a democracy, we are supposed to be governed "by the people". There is no official "training" or college degree to be a government official.  Does being a doctor or lawyer or business person make someone more qualified to be a government official than a professional athlete?   I don't know Kevin Johnson, but perhaps he is very smart, knowledgeable about the issues, and cares about the city? That, to me at least, are the basic qualifications for someone to want to run for mayor of a city.  And it's important to know the type of city government that a mayor will be running.  In many cities, the mayor is a figurehead.  They do not run the city in the day to day operations. They supervise a city manager, who does the actual running of the city.  The mayor presides over a city council who make decisions regarding policy and expenditures; the city manager and his/her staff actually run the city. A oftentimes a mayor needs to be someone who is good at leading people, and making decisions, and to represent that city at events.  S/He is the "heart" of the city, rather than necessarily the "brains" of the city, although intelligence is important, too. Famous people are just people too, and have the same political aspirations and goals as the rest of us.  They can be passionate about the law, politics, and government.  Just because they act or play a sport, doesn't make them any less qualified to step into a role of authority than a local car dealer or doctor. They have name recognition, which helps in a campaign--to a point.  I'm sure there those who won't vote for them just BECAUSE they are a celebrity. I guess it should come down to the fact that we vote on someone if they can do the job we are electing them to, not based on what their previous job was.  It's the voters responsibility to ask questions, do research, and decide if the candidate is actually qualified.   Poppet!'s Recommendations Arnold Schwarzenegger for Governor / TIME Cover: August 18, 2003, Art Poster by TIME Magazine Amazon List Price: $15.95 Poppet! 70 months ago Please sign in to give a compliment. Perhaps some celebrities [Clint Eastwood and Sonny Bono come to mind] actually get tired of fame for fame's sake: tired of just making movies and money, tired of all the vapid interviews.  [In Arnold's case, tired of making the same movie over and over?]  Maybe they actually want leave a more substantial/ positive/lasting influence, when all is said and done.  Or maybe the steroids give them a lust for power?

I'd like to think some actually do it for idealistic reasons.
