Why Is Defense Spending Such A Sacred Cow To The Gop?

"Name calling?" I suppose nitwit is a harsh depiction of those who parade neoconservative policies. The statement "The United States has risen to the occasion in armed conflict time and again" is just the sort of dialect these folks find useful as justification for bloated military budgets in a nation facing serious economic decline. In the past 50 years it would be much more accurate to state that the United States has GENERATED the occasion(excuse) for armed conflict time and again. There is little point in uttering the word "Republican" "minus the polemics". In its current state, the GOP is an outfit that bestows only contempt on those who approach it in a "polite respectful manner". It is a lesson that Obama took 4 years to learn, and the nation continues to pay the price.   stanleybmanly 11 months ago

Speak softly and carry a big stick - Teddy Roosevelt. It is a good strategy. We have been caught with our pants down in the past and we don't want to fall into that trap again. If the Japanese had followed through after Pearl Harbor, we would have been destroyed.During the Iran Hostage crisis under Jimmy Carter, we tried to rescue the hostages. Unfortunately we had let our military fall into disarray. Defense cuts had left us with a military poorly maintained and poorly trained. Our rescue attempt resulted in the deaths of 8 soldiers and no rescue. Hell, we didn't even encounter the Iranians, we killed ourselves. Poor planning, poor execution, and poor maintenance resulted in our helicopters crashing into each other or otherwise falling out of the sky. A disaster that ruined our credibility throughout the world. The problem is that you don't know when you will need the military. There is no fall back position since the rest of the world depends on us for their safety. When Russia attacked Georgia, Europe did nothing. Actually thier only real move was to try and insure Georgia would not become a part of NATO. And that was in their own backyard. If we pull out of S.Korea, how long will they remain independent? The truth is, we could reduce some defense spending(IMHO). I don't think we need bases throughout the world. I would rather see us depend more on our fleet. Aircraft carriers are in fact mobile bases that could supplant some of our presence overseas. Drastic cuts however seem dangerous. Missile defense, superior aircraft, and technology could handle much of our requirement. But the veterans benefits and retirees can't be reduced. I have no problem with common sense solutions but the idea that drones are all we need, doesn't pass the laugh test.   Jaxk 11 months ago

Innate paranoia? The fear that someone is going to come take all their money away? The desire to rule the world - and make it "safe for democracy."All those old hegemony based ideas of the 1950s era and the Cold War.   NanoNano 11 months ago

The video of Ike was done at the end of his term.he was formerly the Supreme Allied commander of the armed forces in WWII and he had a firm grasp about what whas going on in the military world and he saw the begining of the military industrial complex and he was concerned about it and he warned the American public about it in his speech. If you cant see how the Military Industrial complex ties into the GOP's love for military spending i dont know what to tell you except to look it up.BTW defence contracting is the most profitable business in the US bar none.   1TubeGuru 11 months ago

Because the defense industry is composed of the corporations, which the 1% own, and they require the military to enforce their efforts to empirialism elsewhere.   Schelli 11 months ago

Read 1984. The enemy today was yesterdays ally and tomorrow's enemy. We need to be prepared to kill them 100 times over.   Max20characters 11 months ago
