Wisdom Tooth Finally Partly Removed

Postby Zain » Thu Jun 19, 2014 8:21 am

hi there, I finally had it done under a GA. they removed the crown of the wisdom and left the other part in as to the high risk of nerve damage, they told me that part would grow through in time and push through the gum and then it would be away from the nerve and could be removed safely, if I have any problems in the mean time to return and it will be dealt with. I had it done yesterday, I am sore today more then yesterday as the GA and face jab has worn off now. It was great having it done under GA as I dont remember nothing and felt nothing. Took them 20mins to do but was in operating room hour and half, they brought me round with oxygen, and gave me a glucose drink when I came round for energy. I have two dissolving stitches. The tooth originally was distal position impaction. They have put me on antibiotics and pain killers and told to rinse with salt water 4 times a day. and to keep area clean.

I guess they did right but only removing the crown but what do you think? I guess they didnt want to chance it as it was right next to the main nerve.

Wisdom Tooth Finally Partly Removed

Postby Beck » Tue Jul 01, 2014 8:06 pm

Denise -  In this day, there are many surgeons who just remove the crown and leave the roots.  STudies have shown that there is a very small chance of any problems developing and yes the nerve is definitely not traumatized.  When I first practiced saving the roots and just removing the crowns was not considered, but in this day and age of malpractice lawsuits many doctors want to avoid complications that could incite a problem.

Is it the right thing to do?  In the way I was trained, no it was not right, but perspectives have changed and today it is considered fine.
