Is the TV show The First 48 real or fake?

I absolutely love this show. I kinda see it as being real and being fake. The reason I say this is, I don't think you would make up someone's death/murder, especially when it's a child, and therefore I think it's real. All the police work is real, because that's what police officers and detectives really have to do. On the other hand, I think it's fake. I mean I don't think you would make up someone's death, but at the same time that's what happens in movies and other TV shows, like CSI, Law and Order, etc. Also, what real criminal in their right mind would volunteer to be filmed for the whole world to see? And I know they are aware the camera is there because a lot of them turn their heads when the camera faces them. Another thing is what criminal would volunteer to wear a microphone set if they are truly a real criminal. Maybe I don't fully understand it, but can someone please tell me if this show is real or fake, or both?

The first 48 is 100% real. It follows the police during the first 48 hours of an investigation. And they don't really need permission to film suspects all they need to do is pixelate their faces. As for the audio they probably wire the detectives and the rooms up for sound and use boom mikes.
