There are different types of sweepstakes. Not all of them come in the category of lottery or gambling. If a sweepstakes is merely promotional where no purchase is necessary, then it is like a prize or award that the business volunteers to advertise its products and to attract more customers. Such sweepstakes are permissible in Islam. But if a sweepstake requires to purchase a ticket or something similar, and get nothing in return for the value except for those who win, then it would be Haram, because that would be gambling. All kinds of gambling(al-maysir or al-qimar) are Haram in Islam. Allah says, "They ask you concerning wine and gambling. Say(O Prophet), 'In them is great sin and some benefit for human beings, but the sin is greater than the benefit"(al-Baqarah: 219) Lotteries are, perhaps, the most widespread form of gambling. In most lotteries, the gamblers buy numbered tickets. In many State lotteries in America the chances of winning are one to fourteen million times. So

The Noble Qur'an - al-Baqarah 2:219

They ask you(O Muhammad) concerning alcoholic drink and gambling. Say: "In them is a great sin, and(some) benefit for men, but the sin of them is greater than their benefit." And they ask you what they ought to spend. Say: "That which is beyond your needs." Thus Allh makes clear to you His Laws in order that you may give thought.

Hadith - Al-Tirmidhi #580, Narrated AbudDarda' ...don't drink wine for it is the key to every evil.

Hadith - Abu Dawood, Narrated Umar ibn al-Khattab When the prohibition of wine(was yet to be) declared, Umar said: O Allah, give us a satisfactory explanation about wine. So the following verse of Surat al-Baqarah revealed; "They ask thee concerning wine and gambling. Say: In them is great sin...." Umar was then called and it was recited to him. He said: O Allah, give us a satisfactory explanation about wine. Then the following verse of Surat an-Nisa' was revealed: "O ye who believe! approach not prayers with a mind befogged...." Thereafter the herald of the Apostle of Allah would call when the(congregational) prayer was performed: Beware, one who is drunk should not come to prayer. Umar was again called and it was recited to him. He said: O Allah, give us a satisfactory explanation about wine. This verse was revealed: "Will ye not then abstain?" Umar said: We abstained.

Some of the Prophet's marriages were for legislative reasons and to abolish certain corrupt traditions. Such was his marriage to Zaynab, divorcee of the freed slave Zayd. Before Islam, the Arabs did not allow divorcees to remarry. Zayd was adopted by the Prophet(peace and blessings be upon him) and called his son as was the custom among the Arabs before Islam. But Islam abrogated this custom and disapproved of its practice. Prophet Muhammad(peace and blessings be upon him) was the first man to express this disapproval in a practical way. So he married the divorcee of his "adopted" son to show that adoption does not really make the adopted child a real son of the adopting father and also to show that marriage is lawful for divorcees. Incidentally, this very Zaynab was Muhammad's cousin, and had been offered to him in marriage before she married Zayd. He refused her then, but after she was divorced he accepted her for the two legislative purposes: the lawful marriage of divorcees and t
