I have an assignment for my American Political System class, where I have to identify myself on the political spectrum. And although I'm familiar with what both parties stand for, I'm not sure where I would placed. Here are my beliefs:
Social Issues
- I support the legalization of gay marriage.
- I support abortion, however once a women reaches the second trimester of her pregnancy, she should no longer be able to get an abortion, unless her life is at stake.
- I support the legalization and regulation of non-lethal drugs such as marijuana.
- I believe gun control should be dealt with at a state level. States that have a high level of gun violence should have stricter gun control. It makes no sense to me that it's easier to get a gun, whose primary use is to kill, than a driver license. Citizens in these states, that have high crime should be required to take and pass a test to prove they have an understanding of the gun laws and then take a field test to demonstrate they know how to use the weapon properly.
Fiscal Issues
- I'm in favor cutting spending, but not they way most republicans believe it should be done( In which, you get an axe and start chopping everything expect defense.) Nothing should be off the board, spending should be reduced gradually and responsibly over time, with taking extra time to consider the negative effects cutting certain programs can have on the people and the economy.
- The Tax code, All unnecessary loopholes should be should closed. I believe the rich should always have a higher tax rate than the middle class, however their tax rate should not exceed 35%. Whether taxes should be raised or lower should vary depending on the economic situation.
- Education should be brought down to the state's level, because I believe individual states can better decided what is needed for their students and teachers to succeed. However, the Federal Government should set guidelines for states to follow, to make sure no government is allowing discrimination, racism, religion, etc to be taught or mandated in public schools.
- There should definitely be a minimum wage. We can't compete with China's wages, the average factory working there makes 17 cents an hour.
Foreign Policy
- I'm behind Ron Paul. We can no longer afford to police the world. However, unlike Paul, I believe there are some places our troops need to be and we shouldn't end our alliance with NATO. And if we are to bring troops home it should be done slowly, it does no good to bring thousands of troops home to an economy that doesn't have enough jobs, for them.
And that's all I can think of right now. So based on this were would you place me?
