I'm thinking about becoming a LEO after I get out of the military. I'm going into the USMC as an infantryman and I've been contemplating on becoming a police officer. Is past pot and alcohol use disqualifying? I have no intention on lying to them that's why I'm hoping to get some answers on here because I don't want to waste my time trying to go through the process if they're just going to disqualify me. I have no criminal record either and I have never done anything else besides drinking and smoking pot. I would appreciate it if someone who is in law enforcement would answer. I worked for the Sheriff's department and had a prior paraphenalia charge and a DUI....I was honest from the start and told them I was younger and made mistakes and looking for a way to use that experience to help better the community. Never was held against me. Thank you for the contribution you are making to our society...Best of luck!

Just be honest about it. It is usually pretty standard to take a polygraph as part of the hiring process. If you lie about it you definitely will not get the job.
