Can a criminal lawyer practise other areas of law?

In England and Wales, and I suspect Scotland, yes, they can. Some though only "do" a particular area of the law as a matter of choice.

Of course they can. Once you have passed the bar Entrance exam for your state ,you are free to practice any branch of the law. Obviously it makes no sense to get involved with a branch of law in which you have little or no knowledge or experience. What usually happens in "one man" offices is that you have a consultation and if what you are seeking redress in is beyond the scope of the office, you will be referred on, in the bigger practices they usually have a partner that can deal with your inquiry. But yes, a lawyer is free to practice any branch of the law.

You see why it is a complete waste of time you asking a question and for me to answer it. I have given you the answer, and I bet because two idiots that know nothing about the law, except probably because they have had to seek the help of a lawyer, most likely on a drugs charges have given thumbs down, you will believe them. Oh well, the fees still keep coming into the office, so why should I worry. Do have a nice day.

in the UK solicitors are trained in all aspects of the law. Some then specialise in different areas. No one just gets trained in crminal procedures and not the rest. That is not how it works.

Certainly for a barrister it is a disciplinary offence to practise in areas outside one's competence. A criminal barrister would not, therefore, practise in other areas unless he or she happened to have knowledge and experience of them.

While a criminal solicitor might in theory accept work in other areas in which he has received training, it would be a risky thing to do, as it would be all too easy to make mistakes in areas of the law with which he was unfamiliar and any complaint about the defective standard of his work could lead to his being struck off.
