Can a prepaid debit card be traced?

I'm on SSI, and the law says I can't have more than $2,000 in my bank account at any time. I can however hold on to cash. Of course that is very inconvenient if I want to buy something online that costs more than I can have in my bank account. I also don't want to use credit cards because I've heard horror stories about interest and stuff like that, plus I'm terrible at budgeting. So my question is can prepaid debit cards be traced or can I put money on one little by little to get past that technicality?

So, you already understand there is a $2000 asset limit, but think if you can hide the money you can go over the limit with no repercussions. Whether you hold it as cash, debit cards or in a bank account, it still counts.

Why not just have a family member buy it and pay them up front?
