Can American citizens/residents legally bet on sports online?

Ok, so I've been looking into this for a little while, and most of the answers I've found are misleading or incomplete. For instance when I try to access 188Bet, a UK sports gambling site, it says my location is disallowed. However, I was just on bwin.com, another sports betting site, and was able to set up bets. I did not execute the bets, however, as I am completely unsure if it is legal for me to do so? If anyone can break down the rules/laws of Americans gambling online (oversea servers), it would be much appreciated.

Can American citizens/residents legally bet on sports online?

It is not illegal for Americans to bet sports online. What is illegal is for the American banks to process transactions with known gambling entities (UIGEA of 2006) and for businesses to accept wagers, bets, etc... via wire like by telephone or internet (Wire Act of 1961). In both cases, liability falls with the banks and businesses, not the individual.

European sports betting sites do not accept U.S. bettors. I am able to get on several online sportsbooks, flip through their lines and even set up betting tickets however they will not allow me to make an account with them. This is because 1) they do not want to have to jump through the hoops that other sportsbooks must go through to accept U.S. deposits 2) they do not want to be excluded from the U.S. market once online sports betting and gambling transactions operate freely. It is more likely the first reason though.

There are sportsbooks that accept American bettors. I prefer Bodog however I do know that Bookmaker, BetOnline, 5Dimes, and others all allow U.S. placed wagers.

There are no laws making it illegal to gamble online for Americans. There are laws against the banks and gambling countries concerning the transfer of funds (which makes it a little more difficult to deposit and withdraw) but there are NO laws against the players. Recently the U.S. gov't co-operated with Pokerstars (an online gambling company) to help facilitate the return of the U.S. players funds. Pokerstars was charged with crimes but none of the thousands of online poker players were ever charged because they didn''t break any law.

You can only bet at certain online sportsbooks from the U.S. Many don't accept U.S. players. The best online sportsbook accepting U.S. players is Bodog Sportsbook (A+ SBR Rating). More info on Bodog here: http://www.proline-sucks.com/sportsbooks.html

SportBet (A+ SBR Rating) is also a good U.S. friendly sportsbook. Americans can easily deposit and withdraw via ACH payments. More info on SportBet here: http://www.layitdownandwin.com/sportsbooks.html

Yes, you can bet, but only on sites that allow US players.
Some of the sites just choose not to accept US players anymore as the US government is pressing them to quit, even though its legal to bet online in USA.
You can find reviews of US friendly bookmakers here http://www.gamblingsafe.net/usa-friendly-sites/usa-friendly-bookmakers.html
Bookmaker, Intertops and Bodog are the recommended ones.

No they cannot.....and that is why the online companies screw over US residents because it is illegal for them to place bets. The online companies do not pay and there is nothing anyone can do.
