Can NY boss reduce my hourly rate?

Postby shashank » Wed Nov 30, 2011 5:09 pm

I recently, for unknown reasons, got removed from my work site and was sent to look at another site that pays $5.50 less than the previous site. I'm not sure if the union is legit, but I have paid my dues every week for over 3 years. My boss personally told me that my pay will be reduce and that she will take me out of the union. Isn't a union supposed to be something independent? How can she take me out of it? I'm starting to think it's a bogus union to take back money from our paychecks. About 3 years ago there was a class lawsuit, because they were charging us 8 dollars a week for the uniforms they provided us with. Please tell me if I have any rights or if I can take any legal actions.

Unions are essentially large groups of people who do basically the same thing that pay dues to a group who argue for the workers rights. The union is a seperate entity from the employer, and thus the employer, or manager, or boss, etc... cannot remove you from the Union you are a member of.

HOWEVER, the Union is NOT the employer, and while they can fight for your rights, and they can try to influence what you are paid, it is ultimately up to the employer. As long as your employers are abiding by Federal and State Fair Wage Laws, they can do whatever they want with your hourly pay, though generally they do have to give you notice before making a change like that.
