Can you send person-to-person payments from the US to Canada?

Person to person payments seem to be everywhere in the US (Chase QuickPay, ING Direct P2P, Venmo, etc.) and I am so used to using them now. My nephew (in-law) is Canadian and is starting college and I'm looking for an easy way to send him a bit of money on occasion (holidays) that won't involve checkbooks or airline tickets. Are there any free systems that allow person to person payments between the US and Canada (e.g. not Western Union)? I was thinking about prepaid debit cards but there are possible international transaction fees and I'd like him to have the opportunity to pay household expenses with his checking account if the need arises. Thanks!

I live in the UK and send money to my brother in the US through Paypal. If you send as a Gift there are no transaction fees
