Career advice... PLEASE! Going into College and not sure what career path to take which allows flexible hours!?

Postby delrico » Sat Feb 25, 2012 5:22 pm

In May 2012 I will be starting my first year at College. At first I wanted to do Psychology but needed something a little more interesting so I then wanted to be a Criminal Psychologist (assessing the mental health of criminals eg. Deciding whether they belong in prison or mental institution). However, I need a doctorate and University for that and only wanted to graduate as a 2year college bachelor degree. Im now considering Psychology as major and Pre-Law for my minor, as working in Law (eg. Lawyer) has always been apealing to me. What kind of career path should I take within Psychology/Law that will still allow me flexible hours in the workplace to be a mum to my 1 year old son? As being a mother is my first and foremost job and priority. Thanks in Advance :)

There are no 2 year bachelors degrees. A 2 year degree is an associates degree. A bachelors degree takes 4 years. And a lot longer if done part time.

The issue with law is that a young lawyer is expected to put in very long hours for several years to become experienced enough to be useful.

To get your PhD in psych for the sort of work you imagine, it takes about 10 years of university. Part of the PhD is like 3000 hours of unpaid internship where you may be working 12 hours a day for a year or more.

If you have a parent who can take care of your child while at school, it is very hard. In today's labor market there is no consideration given for having kids.

Psychology degree equals no job.
