Stephanie; being able to do something and it being the
best thing to do is not always the same.
I suggest earnestly, that with the 31 days difference,
you pay for the dead month.
IGNORE it in the way that it is an extra expense.
But it can be a blessing in disquise. IT gives you
a back up in case you need a place for friends to stay;
in case a component in the house does not work
correctly, a way station to get your electricity
and gas and water on, etc.
and it allows you a priceless thing; the opportunity
to move into the house SLOWLY. You can make maps of the house and list all your belongings and then,
take things over one room at a time or essential components
at a time. And you can watch your house evolve in
front of you.
IN my opinion, it will easily be worth your while.
and make sure you also give the landlord a 60 day
WRITTEN notice of your intent to vacate on DEC 31.
and when the last day comes--dec 31, have a walk through,
with a friend, and camera and make sure the landlord is there so that you can agree in writing or disagree
in writing as to the condition of things as you left them.
the landlord is required to return any monies due you
within 15 days.
and make sure ABSOLUTELY nothing remains as of DEC 31
before the landlord gets there [trash included]. And make sure you have timed the utilities turn off correctly
and the mail forwarding.
etc.
luck and happiness on your new home!
