Failure to obey reg sign 21461(a)?

I need some help please! I was on vacation in CA and have never experienced a driving experience such as this one. Nevertheless, I set out one evening to go to Universal city and needed to merge on to about 3 freeways

The directions I had seemed accurate only that they didn't advise that there were a bunch of "right lane exit only" exits. I had been on route 101 and had to merge to 110 and needed to be on the left; my poor luck, i was on the right in a right lane exit only. I put my signal on and tried to do my best to merge, but there were two CHP cars right there! I wasn't trying to avoid them, just wasn't trying to get off and the sign came up at the very last minute.

Not to make excuses, I gave crudentials, etc to the officer. Didn't fuss or make a problem - but I have had absolutely NO tickets in my entire life. I guess he processed my information, came back and gave me a ticket stating that there would be NO POINTS and i would have to pay a fine. So, I signed where he told me and did my best to remain calm of the situation.

Now, I'm home, back in New Jersey and I'm researching that citation 21461(a) Failure to Obey reg sign "right lane must exit" has points associated to it! Is there anything that I can do in this situation? If I had the time, I would go back to court for this - but the problem is that its a pretty hefty expense to make it out to the west coast for this.

I need help, please - I am not sure what to do...should I get an attorney? Again, I think that was pretty rotten for the officer to tell me something and then "stick it" to the out of towner anyway. I guess that's what you get for being cordial and not trying to be disrespectful to them. Nevertheless, it all means nothing now...I just would like to know what I can possibly do?

Traffic school?
Pay fine?
whatever it is...I'll do it, but I cannot afford to have points on my license for something that was, bogus - I had my signal and made every attempt to merge when I realized that I was in the wrong lane....I just was not being let in and then they pulled me over. Please help...

When driving in California, you often have to exit (because you are in a right lane must exit lane) and then get back on again. It is annoying, wastes time, and increases traffic on local streets near the interchanges, but this is how it works in CA. If you know where the right lane must exit signs are, then you get out of the right lane before the sign. If the sign is unexpected, then you exit.

In California, you pay the full fine and pay another fee to get a traffic school. In order to get a traffic school, you must not have a traffic ticket for 1 year and 6 months.
Upon paying the fine and request for traffic school, the court will send you a letter that you have ?? months to complete your traffic school and submit a Certificate of Completion. You can do an Online California traffic school. No points if you submitted the Certicate of Traffic School Completion.
