Free Market People what is your perception of a "Company" like Monsanto; Would less regulation mean more death?

Postby curadhan74 » Mon Oct 31, 2011 8:56 pm

I'm asking you specifically because Monsanto seems to be the perfect example of a corporation that is at once an old American name that was built from the ground up.. but that through direct influence on Government has worked itself into a position of absolute world wide Genome and Seed dominance..

They are literally trying to control the worlds food supply. In the meanwhile they have completely infiltrated our political system.. Reagan as one example personally saw to a great deal of specific deregulation that favored the Monsanto agenda.

Probably the craziest thing is Monsanto's very long list of human Carcinogens the company (s) hold patents for and distribute to this very day including Dioxin and rBGH ...compounds they've been sued over and lost cases to repeatedly.. are treated medically by their line of Pharmaceuticals!
Farming both sides of Human disease and suffering?

Is this a Free Market? Do you want Monsanto to be further deregulated? Do you not believe that Monsanto will stop at nothing to completely dominate and ultimately control the food supply?

Can you be against a crooked government but support the companies and corporations that are buying their vote?

Where is the Disconnect?

Your question contains part of the answer. Central government regulation always gets corrupted by the very entities it is supposed to be regulating. Nobody should be surprised at this, it is just the dark side of human nature emerging when it has the opportunity.

That has always happened, and it always will until the human race turns into saints.

But consider an alternative to the corrupted FDA, SEC and all the rest -- litigation.

If the courts were allowed to function as they should, as avenues of just redress, Monsanto would be sued into submission very shortly. But the courts are not allowed to serve the public in this way -- because of that very same incestuous relationship between the central government and the giant corporations.

And no way is what we have in the USA even *close* to a Free Market. Monsanto could not survive in a truly Free Market, because they would be "regulated" by the sheer number of successful lawsuits, and competition would naturally thrive.

I took your kickback seriously (instant pun I guess) and after thnking about it I can still only picture a viable, real free market, without courts or some kind of common law, in a human group of saints. (continued in 2nd comment)

It appears to me that in addition to the ability to freely trade goods and services, humans also need enforceable common agreements (law) to discourage bodily harm and theft of or damage to property. Which implies some government, and some mechanism of redress (courts). I'd love to be incorrect.

Hm ... upon further thought I can almost picture an exclusively interpersonal common law which treats not businesses as entities, but rather the humans who populate them. e.g. If corporation X is polluting my back yard, I sue for damages not the corporation, but the human who made the crux decision.

<inhale> That said, I could be missing something, and again, I'd love to understand a viable alternative.

Why do liberals confuse the desire for less government regulation with anarchy.

No one is proposing we eliminate water standard and clean air acts. Nor is anyone suggesting corporations be given free rein to do what they want.

However, there are thousands of regulations on the books that do nothing to protect us or the environment. They do nothing but create paperwork and revenue for the gov't.

Monsanto hasn't pushed "deregulation".

They've favored the government backing fraud and regulating their competitors out of business.

Edit: Why would I have to give an arbitrary number like 10? Why not 9? 2? or 1? Am I completely wrong if I can't come up with 10? You make no sense.

ADM will fight them and win. Anyway, I have about 10-12k shares in both companies along with Mobile, Exxon, Shell, Microsoft and Intel (thanks grand dad). I live in a small house in no where ville and farm while running 3 businesses with my brothers. Go ahead and tax me more, but when I have to cut a few employees, please give me your home address so I can tell them who to go thank
