Help! Is my car a Lemon!!?

Postby dalon » Wed Dec 21, 2011 10:10 am

I live in New Jersey. I needed a new car and saw a good deal on the internet on a 2004 Scion in Pennsylvania from a small private dealership. So I took a trip out there and it seemed like a good deal at the time. Test drove it, has a little body kit on it, low mileage, ect. Little scratches here and there but nothing big. Said it passed their inspection, was smooth when I rode it, ect. Bought it, came with their own warrenty. 3 weeks later it gets cold here and it has trouble starting! Took it to my mechanic, AND to a Scion dealership and both came with the same conclusion. The wiring harness is bad. That someone messed with it probably trying to do some custom stuff. I called the place, refused to fix it. Warrenty says it covers electrical but when i called, they dont cover wiring harnesses. Not to mention i hit a small pot hole in the road and one of the fog lights popped out! Gone! Even the side reflector had to be pushed back in. What a bad deal! I thought maybe the body kit had something to do with the fog light coming out. but still! The harness and labor goes well over 1000 dollars to fix! NJ or PA Laws? So I dont know what to do. Argued good with the guy who sold it and nuttin. Said things happen with cars. I told him yea in over a year, NOT 3 WEEKS LATER! Please Help....

Several issues are involved here. First of all, you hit a pothole (we have no idea how big it was) and damaged the car. No warranty will cover damage like that! The car had an aftermarket body kit on it, that the dealer did not install. You can not blame them for a weakness in the kit that they did not know about!

This is one reason that modified cars are worth a lot less at dealer auctions than cars that are factory stock.

You did not have the car checked out prior to purchase by your own mechanic, and admit that it was running well when you purchased it. Normally a use car warranty will only cover listed components. If an item is not listed, it is not covered. Unless the wiring harness is listed as covered, it is not going to be covered.

Sorry

Its shouldnt be that much, I had mine replaced for $200, but then again, American cars are hugely cheaper to repair.

Either let your Mechanic make good all the problems, once and for all, or sell it off (nothing much you can D.I.Y. to make good the car)

Was the body kit not a clue that the car was owned by a jimmy-rigger???

Anyway, you have no recourse.

You believed their deal about a good inspection without doing your own.

Enjoy your purchase.

P.S. New cars are lemons. Not new to you, but actual new cars.
