How can we tone down our "American Ways" and show respect for our daughter in laws Japanese home?

Postby cinnard » Sat Jul 07, 2012 8:42 am

We are an American family preparing to visit our son/brother, his Japanese wife and their 2 children in Japan for several weeks. His wife has expressed apprehension about our visit to our son. It seems our American ways seem over bearing to her and she is not excited about the impact our visit will have on her methods of raising her kids.

We are excited to connect/bond/have fun/enjoy the interaction with the children but we love her too and really want to make her feel comfortable. Ideally, we'd love to repair any (unintended) damage we may have done previously and leave the trip closer to her. Unfortunately, we thought we were being very respectful before so we really have no idea how to conduct ourselves according to her Japanese cultural expectations/comfort. Any advice for us?

Yep. Don't give advice unless it is asked for...and ask permission to use anything that is theirs. They are not a backwards people so I really don't think you will have a problem. Enjoy.
