Squatter's rights ; living on and taking care of property that was abandoned by deed holder. Texas I know is still a homestead state, which I was told, replaced the squatter's rights.

Squatters rights is sometimes known as "adverse possession." If you want people to understand you, use that term. Homestead laws allow certain property to be protected from seizure by a bankruptcy court or to satisfy a civil judgment. Homestead laws and adverse possession are unrelated subjects. The both can apply to land but other than that they have nothing in common.
