I have a group name for a promotional team I would like to start. We'd sell calendars, help promote other events for free. Do I need to register this group name with the trademark company? Do I need to obtain a tax id? I have these ideas, but no clue where to start as part of the professional aspect

You should register the name with the trademark company. My advice would be to get support from local businesses and put your products in their stores. You business will grow. As for a tax ID no clue.

sorry but it seems like you want to do stuff in or for a high school or college; if so,
that is not a small biz and you need nothing

Go spend the $20 on a book about "how to start a non-profit organization", or the like. That should answer a lot of your questions or at least focus you on what you're actually facing.

There is no such thing as "register with the trademark company". If you register a trademark (which is often optional), it would be with a government agency (i.e, state trademark office or federal trademark office).
