I am a 58 year old American wanting to live in Mexico as long as I can. According to Mexican immigration law, how many times can I renew my 180 day visa?

You can Not renew FMMs and they have to be surrendered when leaving Mexico. You can turn around and com right back in to get a new FMM. You can only get an extension if you were originally given 90 days which is rare these day. You do Not have to go to the US, Guatemala or Belize , if they are more convenient is recommended
You can do this until you come back for the last time, in a box lol

FMMs are Not Visas and you don`t require any more than a Passport to get one if you are American. They tourist Permits in your case.

I know people who have lived in Mexico for 40 years and never gotten a proper residence visa...just keep getting a 180 day tourist visa again and again and again. the only reason I know of for people not getting an FM# ( Non-Immigrante) visa, is that they cannot meet the financial requirement for the FM3. I have a good friend who has lived here 5 years. she can afford an FM3 , but she is always flying back and forth to the US., several times a year for business or family reasons, so she just keeps getting a new tourist permit, and has not yet bothered to get a residence visa. Many Americans who live here go back and forth frequently like that. then, there are those like me that don't have the funds for all that traveling!

you can expend that time in mexico as a tourist, and then you have to back to the us at list for one day, and back, so, ask for a new permit, then will be other migration officer. if you want to be a resident, check www.inm.gob.mx
