I was involved in an accident with my motorcycle, where I hit a vehicle on his rear because he slammed on his breaks very hard. I guess in the state of CA it’s my fault no matter what. I was riding without insurance but I had a motorcycle license. He was driving without a license but he had insurance. ( a police report was taken ). However, weeks have pass now I got a letter in the mail saying basically that I was driving a motorcycle which was involved in an aforementioned accident and I failed to provide my insurance information as required by law. Its also telling me to kindly sign my name below, and “x” out the appropriate box and return this letter immediately. If they don’t hear from me within the 10 days upon receipt of the letter, they will be forced to take appropriate legal actions against me. I’m only 20 years old, I have no assets, I have no job, no money, I’m a college student, and the government is paying for my school, and my father just filed for bankruptcy and we lost our house. I have no idea what to do and would appreciate some advice.

-what’s the worst that can happen?
- do I have to respond to the lawyer’s letter?
- My friend said he’s just trying to scare me. (I think this isn’t true)
- if I do get sued what do they get out of this?

"- if I do get sued what do they get out of this?" What does WHOM get out of this? The other party gets a judgement in their favor, and you get your wages (future) garnished

Now you know why you should not be driving without proper insurance. If you are as poor as you claim how come you have a motorcycle? Totally irresponsible behavior on your part. What kind of damage happened to the car that you hit? I suggest you sell your motorcycle and contact the lawyer handling this case to make arrangements for payment. Did you get a citation? Now, you may need legal representation. See what you can do. You need to be responsible. Sell the motorcycle as you cannot ride it. Pay what you can. Make arrangements. Do not ignore this or your will find yourself in deep trouble.

1. You will loose your license.

2. You will be fined for this as well up to $500 plus penalties.

3. You may have to comply with the financial responsibility laws (SR22) including having to pay for any injuries or damages from the accident out of your own pocket.

4. The other party can and will sue you and since you don't have a job or money and the court will file a judgment against you that will end up on your credit report.

5. The judgment will remain on there until you have paid it off completely.

also till all the lawyer fees and damage is paid for you may not be able to keep your license
