What steps can I do to summit my idea...I don't need an attorney to do it right? is it free? what other information can I use? thank you for any info? Also, it is more of something other manufacturers could use on their products, so would that just be a patent or trademark?

Read through it, it gives you a good idea what is and is not patentable, and what the process is. It s NOT free, but it's also not horribly expensive.

However, it's worth pointing out that a patent NOT done by a qualified lawyer is unlikely to give you much benefit. It can be done, but it's really not recommended.
