So this unfortunate situation just gave me a thought on gun laws. If the man stood outside and aimed a gun at those taking his property, could they arrest him on his property, could he defend his property? I am naive about gun laws and in they differ state to state. Also, couldn't he have called reported that his property was stolen? I know its just a basketball hoop, but it could turn into something more if people allow this violation of property.

Actually, the people in violation are the ones who put up the basketball hoops. There is something called a covenant that is in the deed and it runs with the land. They never disappear, and they are easy to determine. You have to abide my them. You can't buy your property and ignore them. These people obviously did this. Well, guess what, if you have a covenant and your neighbor complains you are going to forced to take down whatever broke the covenant.
