I think my cat caught a bat. What should I do?

Postby dacy17 » Tue Jul 17, 2012 8:31 pm

My cat was outside and I heard him crying so I went out to check on him and there was a bat crawling along the ground. I brought my cat in straight away and when I went to check on the bat he had crawled behind my drainpipe and he's still there now about an hour later. I think he could be injured. I used a torch to look at it and it's fur looks wet so I think my cat had it in his mouth. I know bats are a protected animal and there are lots of laws regarding the handling of them. I've looked it up online and it says that I should capture it in a box but I'm worried about injuring the bat and it is behind a drain pipe so I don't think I'd be able to get it. The drain pipe is about twice as wide as the bat. The bat is about half a foot off the ground.
I've checked my cat over for scratches and cuts but he doesn't appear to have any. I heard that bats can carry rabies so I'm worried about my cat too. I can't afford the vets right now but I want to get him checked over...

first of all try taking your cat to a free clinic, they have them all over they're way cheaper than regular vets but you may have to wait in a long line, but for your cats health its worth it.

As for the bat, first of all i thank you for being so kind as taking the bats well being into consideration as well instead of being a cruel person and leaving it out to die, call animal services and they will help you with the bat.

hopefully everything will go swell with both your cat and the bat

i hope ive helped and i hope you have a wonderful day

Uh either get the bat out now and keep it inside until help comes or wait for it to die then drop it off somewhere in the forest.. as far as your cat, if you can't afford it, just keep an eye out for him. I am sure he is fine, but just to be safe, look for unusual behavior in him. Also don't let him bite you for a week or so.. just in case. Also if the area around the bat was wet, there's a possibility it was that, but that's a little risky.
