An individual owes me money and he threatened me with physical violence if I contact him, file criminal charges or take him to civil court (in Montana). This was done through. text messages. What laws does this violate?

If you have evidence (the text messages) bring it to the police department if you feel threatened. Depending on the text messages a variety of laws could have been broken.

Depending on how it's worded in your jurisdiction it could be threats of bodily harm, terroristic threats, etc. Either way, it's illegal and you should call the police.
