Always up front. Whether or not you win or lose they want to get paid.

You pay first. Hope you don't get the old dodger I got in Hereford! Said the case was close - gave his verdict then told me I had wasted my time turning up. Awarded me a reduced figure after ignoring the evidence I submitted and did not allow travel expenses. He told me he could decide whether I could appeal or not and he was not allowing an appeal!

Democracy at its best! A company didn't want to pay for services rendered - made false accusations against me (details of which I did not have at the time and took a year to verify do to the field). The person who made the accusations perjured himself in court. I have been so incensed about the affair I will probably write and publish the whole story next year. I cannot understand people who act as though there is no comeback on them, a trait I have only found in England!

you pay a fee which is related to the amount claimed to initiate the action, failure of the defendant to respond, gives judgement by default in 16 days, if contested there is an additional fee for a court hearing.
other fees apply to enforce a favourable judgement some of which carry a custodial sentence for the judgement debtor, for non compliance, if skillfully deployed.

You pay filing fees, win or lose, but if you win you can ask for the other party to reimburse your fees.

And it is possible that you could be awardes, pauper status and have fees waived.
