Parents have the right to choose whether or not to allow the "child" to live in their house after the age of 18, and whether or not to charge rent. After reaching maturity, the son or daughter has no right to remain living at home rent-free unless the parents permit it. They are under no obligation to provide lifetime support to their children. They also have the right to require that their children follow house rules while living at home. If they don't like it, the adult children may move out.
