The company I work for has us start at 7am every morning, and we're all driven an hour to the job site over about 40 miles or so (one way) by the the designated driver for the day in the company truck. At the end of the workday, though, instead of being paid for the ride home (again, in the company truck), we're clocked out when we leave the job site, and only the driver is paid for the drive home. Despite this, we're required by our supervisors to unload any tools, fill up the vehicles with fuel, and make sure we have everything for the following morning while not on company time. To explain a bit better, today we clocked in at 7 am, loaded the trucks, got to the job site at 8:30 and worked until 3. We were then clocked out (off company time) on the drive back to the shop, where, when we arrived, were required to clock back in and do more work on the shop grounds after our normal duties. To me, this not only seems unfair, but also illegal. I can't understand how you force your workers to work while not paying them, as well as putting them in a position where because they are not on company time, they're not covered under workman's compensation if there were an accident on the drive back to the shop. It would seem to me that if you're in a company vehicle, representing said enterprise, you should be paid to do so. I apologize for the lengthy explanation, and I thank you for reading it, but this seems a bit complex to just ask simply.
